Parent's music resource center
The Parent's Music Resource Center or PMRC was founded in 1984 by a group wives of prominent men in Washington, earning themselves the title of "Washington Wives". The main four include: Tipper Gore, wife of Senator and future Vice-President Al Gore, Susan Baker, wife of the Secretary of Treasury James Baker, Pam Howar, wife of major realtor Raymond Howar, and Sally Nevius, wife of Washington City Council Chairman John Nevius. These women came together over their mutual dislike of the music that was popular at the time. The women wrote a letter to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and demanded that they either ban explicit songs or have some kind of warning label to warn parents before buying the album. They then created the "Filthy Fifteen" list, a list of the fifteen most explicit songs, and began the steps to have a full hearing in Congress over the matter, using the power of their husbands. Their ultimate goal was to have these songs banned or at least some type of label, preferably categorized based on content, so that no child would ever be subjected to such extreme music without awareness of the parent.
